250,000 revellers usher in 2009 at Marina Bay

SINGAPORE: Over a quarter million people ushered in the New Year at Singapore's new downtown Marina Bay.

There was high energy to reflect the troubled times, but there were also quiet moments of peace and hope for 2009.

The specially-choreographed fireworks at Marina Bay took spectators' breath away.

"Fantastic fireworks, great show, all good," said a man in the crowd.

An Indian woman added: "It's definitely something different compared to New York, so it's great to be out here."

More than 10,000 spectators came to watch the very first full-length concert out on Marina Bay.

Revellers were entertained with 90 minutes of song and dance by local celebrities from Singapore's MediaCorp Channel 5, Asian Idol Hady Mirza and Filipino band 'River Maya'.

As much as many would say that 2008 has been a rough and unforgettable year, many more celebrating at Marina Bay would hope for 2009 to be a much better one.

It’s nice and amazing to watch the fireworks as every time the ways of the fireworks display is always different.

2009 looks set to be a busy year for Singaporeans

SINGAPORE: From means testing in public hospitals, which kicks off on Thursday, to the opening of Marina Bay Sands Integrated Resort at year-end, 2009 looks set to be a busy year.

The economy, which has dominated headlines, will continue to do so in January.

The National Wages Council is expected to come up with new recommendations by mid-month, while Singapore Budget has been brought forward to January 22.

Health-wise, there are major changes too.

HIV testing is going to be an opt-out scheme in all public hospitals and changes to the law to allow living donors to be compensated under the Human Organ Transplant Act are also expected. The sum will be decided this year.

The laws surrounding how criminals will be penalised will also see changes, with the Law Ministry proposing to replace the current Criminal Procedure Code.

In addition to that, the government is expected to give its position later this month on a proposal to repeal the law that bans party political films.

On a day-to-day basis, Singaporeans can look forward to smoother journeys, with part of the MRT Circle Line scheduled to open by mid-year.

Two new cards – a new generation EZ Link card and a NETS transit card – that can do more than just pay public transport fares – are scheduled to be pushed out in January and September, respectively.

Sports-wise, Singapore will host the inaugural Asian Youth Games in June, in the run-up to the Youth Olympic Games in 2010.

Another big hosting event in November this year is the APEC summit where world leaders are expected to gather in Singapore.

Thai protesters vow to return in New Year

BANGKOK: Opponents of new Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Wednesday they would resume protests in the New Year, a day after forcing the premier to move the venue of his first policy speech.

Thousands of red-shirted supporters of fugitive former Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra dispersed overnight after blockading parliament for two days to press their demands for fresh elections.

The protesters had prevented Abhisit from giving his maiden policy address in parliament Tuesday and the prime minister had to deliver the speech at the foreign ministry instead.

"We will come back after the New Year break," Shinawat Haboonpak, a core pro-Thaksin protest leader, told AFP. "The fight is not over yet, we will not give up."

The pledge raises the threat of 2009 starting with the kind of problems that marred 2008, during which a royalist, anti-Thaksin group called the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) held months of protests against the government.

Abhisit, Thailand's third prime minister in four months, came to power in mid-December after a court barred previous premier Somchai Wongsawat - Thaksin's brother-in-law - from politics for five years.

The court verdict came shortly after the yellow-shirted PAD had occupied both of Bangkok's airports, causing major damage to the economy and the vital tourism industry.

Abhisit said Wednesday that Thaksin - who was ousted in a military coup in 2006 and is living in exile to avoid a jail term for a corruption conviction - would get fair treatment if he decided to return home.

"The government will give Thaksin fairness," Abhisit told reporters.

He said he accepted that protests by Thaksin loyalists may continue but added that if the government was successful then the "protests could not pressure us."

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said the government had plans to talk to the government's opponents to seek a peaceful solution.

The "red shirts" say Abhisit's government is illegitimate and that the court verdict that dissolved the previous government was a "disguised coup."

The Oxford-educated Abhisit, 44, has said he will call elections only at the "appropriate time" after he has made headway on the country's economic and political woes.

HONG KONG: A Hong Kong-born infant has contracted a mild form of bird flu, the fifth case of its type in the territory, health authorities said on Tuesday.

The two-month-old girl, who lives with her parents in China's southern city of Shenzhen, was diagnosed with the influenza A (H9N2) infection after she developed vomiting, a cough, and a runny nose, according to the city's Centre for Health Protection.

Thomas Tsang, controller of the centre, said the virus was detected in a specimen taken from the girl's respiratory system when she was admitted to Hong Kong's Tuen Mun Hospital on December 22.

She was discharged on December 23, but re-admitted to the hospital six days later because of a high white blood cell count, which may be suggestive of an underlying haematological condition, the centre said.

The girl is staying in the hospital for further investigation.

"Further genetic sequencing is being conducted to determine if the virus is completely of avian origin," Tsang said.

"As the girl was staying in Shenzhen for the whole incubation period, we have informed the Guangdong health department of this case and they will carry out necessary investigation and follow-up actions."

The department will inform the World Health Organization and health authorities in Macao of the findings, he said.

H9N2 is an avian flu virus that mainly affects ducks and chickens, the centre said. Infection in humans is rare, and presents as a mild disease.

Three girls and a boy were confirmed to have been infected with H9N2 in 1999, 2003 and 2007 respectively.

On December 11, Hong Kong's government confirmed that the deadly H5N1 virus had been found at a poultry farm near the city's border with China, the first outbreak of the virus on a local farm in nearly six years. More than 90,000 chickens were culled to prevent the spread of the flu.

Hong Kong was the scene of the world's first reported major H5N1 bird flu outbreak among humans in 1997.

SINGAPORE: The operator of the Singapore Flyer said Wednesday it is suspending operations to carry out extensive investigations on the actual cause of the disruption on Tuesday.

Technical crews are investigating what tripped the electrical system which stopped the observation wheel from rotating for nearly seven hours.

It is understood that the fault could lie with an isolated motor unit.

The company is also carrying out extensive safety checks before resuming normal operations.

For customers who have booked tickets for rides on Christmas Eve, refunds will be made.

As for continuing operations on Christmas Day, it will depend on the outcome of the safety checks and investigations.

A company spokesperson said the firm is making sure all safety procedures are in place before normal operations can resume.

A major power disruption left 173 passengers stranded for some six-and-half hours when the giant observation wheel came to a halt shortly before 5pm on Tuesday.

Ten passengers were rescued through ceiling hatches and winched to the ground.

Power was restored and the wheel resumed turning after 11pm.

Remembering my first trip to MacRitchie’s Nature Trail
Wearing my slipper there…
Running up the trail along the reservoir
Don’t even notice about the time
We walk up to the Tree Top Walk and found out that
IT WAS CLOSED!
I was like quite disappointed
However I went again earlier on the 2nd trip
Recall the first trip we left the place in pitch darkness
Cannot even see anything in front of us…
And the most important thing is that we have forgotten to bring a spotlight
So we have to use our senses to find our way out of that place
Overall it was thriling…

Spent the last few day of my holiday with my friend

Cycling at East Coast Park…
After cycling for ½ hour
What you cannot imagine is that…
I saw everything a negative…
All the objects are simply black and white
Feeling the heaviness of my head…
Cannot balance while walking
And that feeling was really terrible and scary
Almost faint if I continues standing…
The next day…
We went to Wild Wild Wet…
Reach the about 3plus with a bus ride of 1hours
Almost fall asleep in the bus…
By the time I reach there I had no mood the go anymore
But in the end still went
I was freezing when I enter the water
The temperature of water was so cold for me
That I take me sometime to adapt to it…
Over all I still enjoyed myself……

The movie was about 2h long…
At the first half hour it’s quite boring
Because I don’t even understand what they are talking about…
It’s just a friction how can I human turn into a vampire?
That was really impossible in real facts~

Yesterday was the first NDP'08 combined rehearse
I did lost of mistakes

-Not paying attention

Furthermore yesterday was only the first practice on that stage

I was just quite angry with my friend yesterday
Let say about what he have do to me then i will tell you more about him
One that day, i was have a science lesson
And at that time, him pen ink was dripping and was finding for paper to clean on
But he could not find any paper at all.
So guess what have he done?
It was such i stupid way of doing it
He clean the ink of the pen on my hair and it was not funny
What if that was happening to you?
Maybe you would do something worst

But today, he caught him using him phone in class
In my school rules,
Once any teacher saw someone using phone at the lesson
The phone will be gone
I just felt happy because it is just a relevance
But at the sometime,
I'm sad for him as his phone was not with him now!

It is just a relieve after the choir camp
It is not very fun
AND
Not that bad too
That was a 3 day 2 nights camp in the school
During the first day, we were all some big bag to school
And what we have for lunch was just a kind of food from hell
It was a chicken rice but i taste like is was cooked over the night and place inside the fridge
And just let us eat it. Although it was tasteless, we still have no choice to eat it
Or we will have nothing to eat for lunch
Lucky, at the second day the food was better a taste nicer than the first day
It was fun as the games we played for the first day was rather interesting and meaningful
But we all got tired as the whole game lasted for 2h plus
We were all running all over the school to find clues
At night, we were still quite enjoying ourselves after the tiring game
We were all in a air-con room watching movies
The sleeping place was not what we expected that clean
As the floor was fill with fine sand and dust all over the place
We still have to clean up the room in order to have a clean place to sleep.

To me there is just only two types of love.
First is those who felt in love with their wealth
And Second is those who really fall in love with you
To you which type of love is more meaningful?
Would rather stay together with someone who you love him/her very much but he/she don't not earn much.
Or
You will stay together with someone who you don't really have feeling with but he/she is just rich.
What is the importance of love?
So have you love the right ones who you care and love him/her?
To me love is more important that wealth.
